It only makes sense that we show respect for those who have chosen to participate in the Martin Luther King Memorial Dedication ceremonies this week. Millions of Americans truly appreciate the legacy of Dr. King, and their involvement in the ceremony is reflective of this sentiment. So, my desire not to participate in the commemoration… [Continue Reading]

Gay rights are an awkward topic for the NAACP. An appearance by Comedian Wanda Sykes may have made some attendees uneasy at a panel discussion in Downtown L.A.

Valuable time is ticking away, and there is now less than a week left until the U.S. runs out of money. Government leaders around the world are getting nervous. According to Reuters, a board member of the Bank of Japan stated, “As the world’s biggest economy, the U.S. would have an immeasurable impact on global financial markets and Japan would not escape the damage. The United States Justice Department is preparing to launch an investigation against Wells Fargo, a company that serves as the largest home mortgage lender in the country. The company is being accused of taking advantage of minority consumers by selling them loans that were overpriced and more likely to lead to default.
Wells Fargo is not only the fourth-largest bank in the United States, it is also a key sponsor of the annual NAACP Convention. The organization took criticism last year when they dropped a discrimination lawsuit against the company shortly before announcing that they were set to receive money from the bank.

The actor Morgan Freeman is livid that conservatives used a voice that sounded like his to campaign against a Democratic opponent. Freeman went out of his way to make it clear that he didn’t authorize the use of his voice or a likeness of it for the video. The ad is one that attacks candidate Shelly Moore in the state of Wisconsin. Although the voice sounds eerily similar to Freeman’s he makes it clear that he didn’t do it:

A new study presented some disturbing, yet expected news about the sad state of economic affairs within the African American community. According to the study, the wealth gap between white and black Americans has become the widest that it’s been in the last 25 years. As it stands, whites have a wealth level that is 20 times greater than blacks, and 18 times greater than Hispanics.
Much of the drop in black family wealth is due primarily to the decline in home values and heightened unemployment during the great recession of the last three years. African Americans currently have the highest unemployment rates in America, with the most recent data listing the rate at 16.2 percent.

There’s a new discussion regarding one of today’s most controversial topics: birth control. In the past it has been questioned why birth control pills are currently not covered by most private insurance plans, but products like Viagra are. It seems change may be coming soon. This week, the non-partisan Institute of Medicine recommended that health insurers reclassify women’s contraceptives as “preventive care” and cover them without requiring a co-payment under the Affordable Care Act.

It appears that Tiger Woods’ wife is not the only person who has a bone to pick with him. Tiger’s former caddy, Steve Williams, is planning to write a tell-all book about his life with Woods, and some expect that it’s not going to be pretty. After serving by Tiger’s side for 12 years, Williams was fired recently, and doesn’t appear to be happy about it. As a result, Williams is already letting the drama fly like a golf ball into a breezy summer day.
Williams has mentioned that one of the chapters of his book will be all about Woods and their relationship. Of course, this is the chapter that got him the book deal, and the one that everyone is to see.

When advertisers try to ‘appeal’ to a specific audience on whom they have failed to do their research, the outcome isn’t so great. That was the case once again in a new Summer’s Eve advertisement that many are saying mixes racial stereotypes in a way that is both sexist and tasteless.

Good morning, everybody. Before the day starts here in England I wanted to say a few words about the devastating storms that we’ve seen in Missouri and Minnesota and across the Midwest.
Like all Americans, we have been monitoring what’s been taking place very closely and have been heartbroken by the images that we’ve seen in Joplin, Missouri, in particular. The devastation is comparable and may end up exceeding some of the devastation that we saw in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, just a few weeks ago.

Quick note from Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World
After posting the piece by Dr. Wilmer Leon, a Political Scientist and objective Obama observer, stating that African Americans are jeopardizing our Democratic freedoms by squashing all voices of dissent as it pertains to President Obama, I received this interesting comment from one of my Facebook friends.
His name has been removed, but perhaps there is some logic to what he’s saying. He also appears to be neutral in the Obama conversation, which makes his point even more relevant. His simple, yet poignant statement was something I felt compelled to share with others:
Maybe I can add some insight as to why many Blacks are reluctant to criticize Obama. I think that many of us feel that he is under constant UNFAIR criticism and are afraid that even fair criticism will be seen as just piling on. We can be compared to a mother who is over protective of her child because the father abuses him. She feels that her child should have someone who accepts him unconditionally. As a result she may spoil the child. It’s not right , but it happens. That’s how some view Obama. We see people hoping that he will fail. We see people asking for birth certificates, accusing him of being against America, wanting everything he does to go down in flames, etc. So some of us seem willing to ‘overlook" his faults. It’s not right , but it happens.
